‘Mapping Pins’ - An arbitrary, abstract arrangement of colourful mapping pins on a wall, or a study of Molecular systems?
A sewing machine is used as a drawing tool to impregnate the surface of old fabric backed ordnance survey maps, to trace over road routes and rivers in the map.
Materiality and making blend together in this example of the remade map, drawing reference from and simulating sequined cloth.
In ‘The World and I’, a diagram from a reference book on world geography (depicting waves of air pressure), is pasted onto the neck of the figure in this anatomical diagram (depicting the human circulatory system), which clearly hints at the side profile of a head.
The idea of repairing or rebuilding the body is referenced in the use of stitch along linear paths evident in medical illustrations, which at the same time, makes the image seem more tangible and alive.
Imagery and text blend together to create delicate interlaced collages.
Embroidery is traditionally perceived as ‘Woman’s work’ and this work takes reference from formal qualities of historical examples of work.
On closer inspection, the painterly appearance of the work transposes itself into an appliquéd textile work.
